Hiking the Juan de Fuca Trail with Two Kids in Tow (Video)
Hiking the Juan de Fuca trail with our two kids was mostly type two fun. Meaning that hiking the trail didn’t really feel fun, or at least some sections of it. In fact at times it felt more like a survival trip, but in retrospect it was a lot of fun. It was a tough journey for us and the kids – especially for our five year old who hiked it all by himself, but we all came out of it stronger and proud of what we achieved. We all tend to appreciate or want certain things when we don’t have them any more, or can’t have them for a…
Discovery Islands: It’s a Wild World (Video)
This summer we’ve done a lot of local trips around our province of British Columbia, Canada. At the end of summer we set off on an eleven day biking trip. It was a loop starting in Comox on Vancouver Island, and on to Quadra and Cortes Islands (AKA the Discovery Islands) and down the Sunshine Coast from Lund to Powell River and back on the ferry to Comox. This trip was a natural continuation of a bike trip we did three years ago further south. If there is one thing this year has taught us, it is that it’s a crazy world. But it’s also wild and beautiful and there…
Taiwan: The Sun Can’t Shine Every Day (Video)
Taiwan was surprising. It was a mix of everything. Urban, rural, busy roads, quiet roads, tropical beaches & fruit, heat and rain. Even if it took us a bit of time to warm up to Taiwan we loved almost every minute of our time there, which now seems very far away. It’s home to some of the loveliest and friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Our kids aged 4.5 and 1 got the royal treatment there as you can see in this short video. Most of the roads and bike paths were safe enough for our older son to bike by himself which he loved. We also skipped some sections we…
Japan: It’s All a Dream to Me Now (Video)
In the Fall of 2019 we spent six weeks cycling in Japan with our two children, aged 4.5 and 1 (followed by six weeks in Taiwan). One of the lines in the song I chose for this video goes “it’s all a dream to me now.” Since this trip the world changed completely due to COVID-19. Everything that seemed doable and easy then is now out of reach, at least for awhile. How lucky were we to have done this trip before the world had gone mad? Hopefully, we’ll have more opportunities for cycle touring in the future and not just in our dreams. As for our route, we started…
Greece: Bike Hopping on Seven Magical Islands (Video)
We spent five weeks in winter 2019 bike hopping on seven islands in Greece with our four year old and four month old. It was a spectacular experience for everyone and a great bonding opportunity for the two brothers. We fell in love with the slow pace of the Greek islands, the food, and the low key atmosphere. Since it was winter the beaches were empty and the accommodation was cheap. Luckily it was sunny and warm almost every day. We can’t wait to explore more of the Greek islands on our bikes and perhaps even the mainland someday. Here is a short video of the highlights of the trip.
Around Lake Michigan with a Three Year Old on a Bike (Video)
In May we went to a family wedding in Chicago and decided to stay on and do an 11 day bike trip around Lake Michigan. It was the first long bike trip on which our three year old son Neil biked part of the way by himself. The route was very flat and included many bike trails, some of which used to be old railways. We crossed the lake by ferry, cycled in four different states, stayed with friendly families through Warmshowers and took the train back to downtown Chicago. We hit a heatwave so we swam in the lake a lot and to Neil’s delight we made a stop at…
Every Day is ‘Just Another Day in Paradise’ While Cycling Around Maui (Video)
In February 2018 we set out on a three week cycling adventure around Maui with our three year old. After hearing how touristy Maui is we were surprised to find some of the quietest roads we’ve ever ridden, deserted beaches and endless views at every bend. Maui literally took our breath away. It was a magical experience and every day on Maui truly felt like ‘Just Another Day in Paradise’.
Looking for America while Cycling in Washington and Idaho (Video)
In May 2017 we went on a two week road trip from our home in Vancouver, British Columbia. We crossed the border to Washington and drove to Clarkston, at the south-eastern corner of Washington. We did two bike trips – a five day trip which we named the Snake River Loop, which was very scenic and included quiet roads, bike paths and small town America in both Washington and Idaho. On the second trip we followed the Centennial Trail from Spokane, Washington to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and back over three days. It was our first trip to the States post Trump and in a way we went to “look for…
Family Cycling Close to Home: Vancouver Island, Hornby, Denman & The Sunshine Coast (Video)
In September 2017 we left our home in Vancouver on our bikes with our toddler in tow and cycled for ten days on Vancouver Island, hopped over to Denman and Hornby Islands and went down the Sunshine Coast. We took eight ferries, stayed with three Warmshowers hosts, camped, swam at many beautiful beaches and ate an endless amount of blackberries. There was something very magical and yet simple about leaving home on our bikes and returning ten days and 330 kilometers later on our bikes. This video gives a taste of this amazing trip.
Family Cycling Adventure in Northland, New Zealand (Video)
On Christmas Eve 2016 we left Vancouver and hopped on a 14 hour flight to Auckland, New Zealand. Skipping Christmas altogether, we landed in sunny NZ with our bikes, trailer, and Neil, our almost two year old toddler. We decided to head north from Auckland to an area called Northland where we spent the next month cycling. Despite the narrow and hilly roads we had a great time. Incredible views, long sandy beaches, too much fish n’ chips, and many friendly Kiwis all around.
